Blog Vs LMS Vs Facebook

Last week we did a quick writeup during lecture about these three. Blog, LMS and Facebook are the common platform used by teachers and educators alike to host their work and information about what they are teaching online.

What we did was to compare and contrast these three from our point of view. Below are what I wrote.

- Only the users of LMS and Facebook need to registered and logged in to view the contents. For Blog most of the time people who knows the URL can just surf and browse around. Blog can still be private but when it comes to blogging about educations that is very rare.

- Facebook are more towards social networking rather than used for education. This is proven otherwise as almost all users of Facebook used it for keeping up with friends, families rather than following something educational.

- Blog is the simplest of all three in a way that there is not much for the viewers to click on. For LMS and Facebook normally links and information are sometimes not so visible to the viewers. It does involves the viewers to look extra careful on what is being posted.

- LMS is the most formal amongst the three as the layout and structure are well organized. Users must be invited and logged in to view and participate in the discussions. As to this some may get lost during browsing as there are too many links to click on (almost similar to Facebook). For Blog this is eliminated as most or all of the information and educational materials are posted in the posts done by the owner of the Blog.

- Blog can be customized in a way that it can attract the viewers. This can eliminate the sense of formal learning where young learners sometimes dislikes. LMS and Facebook overall layout are just words and links that are sometimes nested inside other links.

- LMS and Facebook users that are not invited cannot comments and give feedback. And sometime the users can not even view the LMS and Facebook page. For Blog, anyone can give comments and feedback to any post and this can still be monitored by the owner to avoid any inappropriate feedback.

- All three can be used for E-Learning or even distance learning but LMS can provide a more secure learning as all users, posts and activities can be monitored. LMS can also provide feedback on how the users are doing and how is the performance of the users.

Future Science Lab Proposal

With the current advancement in technologies where the sky is the limit, who knows how will the future science lab look like in the future. If I were to design how a science lab would look like within the next coming years, below are some of the ideas:

- Each lab will be equipped with individual workstations for each students.

- The workstations are connected with other via high speed network with internet access.

- Each lab will have their own dedicated servers where the server will contain and host all of the notes, exercises, digital textbooks, learning materials and resources for the students and teachers.

- The lab will be “paper free” as students comes to the lab and just need to log into their individual account from their own workstation. Then they just need to access the server and look for the files that they need to download for the lesson.

- The server in the labs are also accessible by the students from virtually anywhere as long as they have internet access. This means the students can access their work, homework, assignments, projects anywhere, anytime.

- All work that is done by the students are uploaded to the server and the server are able to check all of the submitted work. The server is able to mark, check, correct and store records of all the work done and uploaded by the students. The server is also able to scan and check any work if it is being copied or plagiarized by the students from any source that can be found on the internet.

- From each workstations, students are able to communicate with their peers via webcam. This can be a 1 to 1 communication or by forming a live group where live discussion can be carried on. The students are also able to do the same with the teacher.

- Teachers can access the server from virtually anywhere and the teacher can do a live monitoring of all of what is happening in all workstations just with a push of a button. The teacher then can also block and terminate any unnecessary activities or work done by the students.

Hello & Welcome.

This blog is still under construction. Will be coming soon, to a computer near you.
